Artist: David Sylvester, II David Sylvester started playing the piano as soon as he was old enough to reach up and touch the keys. At four, his parents pasted stickers on an electric keyboard to allow their son to follow music he could not yet read. By the time he was eight, he was taking lessons and teaching himself classical pieces. By 12, he had auditioned and been selected by members of the St. Louis Symphony as one of a small group of students who work with them in a 2-week accelerated summer camp program for gifted musicians. Here David was privileged to learn from seasoned professional musicians and the experience paid off. Before his second summer with the Symphony, he had begun to compose pieces of his own. Sighting Jim Brickman and Kurt Bestor as two of his key influences, David now writes music as much as his busy schedule allows (he's a straight-A sophomore at North County High School in Bonne Terre Missouri, active in church and community and has earned his Eagle Scout rank). One fall night in 1997, David was having dinner at the Arlington Hotel in DeSoto, Missouri (a St. Louis bedroom community where he lives with his parents and three siblings). He noticed an old upright piano in the dining room and asked if he could play it. The owner agreed and David sat down and began to play a classical medley. The restaurant fell silent. And David's first regular job as a musician began. The community responded overwhelmingly and David still sometimes plays at the Arlington, where he is a favorite of the regulars. His playing skills are in great demand and he stays very busy playing for a large local venue of private parties, corporate gatherings, weddings and special events. A consummate musician, David can literally play almost any instruments he picks up (he also sings). The selections on his first CD, My Turn, show his diversity, skill and eloquence. Local radio, television and print journalists have made David's talent well known and acclaimed artist Jim Brickman was so impressed with David's music, he featured him on his own website as a Brick's Pick. (David and family were especially honored to meet Brickman at a recent St. Louis concert.)
